Final Thoughts
I would say this is the best of the original Alien Bee lineup for action sports. The flash durations are fast enough to use at any power setting. It should be noted that all 3 of the AB (400, 800, 1600) have longer flash durations as you power them down, which is the opposite of speedlights. In order to get a lot of power out of these, it would be suggested to pick up the 11" reflectors, which are quite large but focus the light in a more narrow beam, and essentially double the output.
Also a nice feature is the relatively low cost of the accessories, and the customer service at Paul Buff is fantastic.
